Motorcycling Australia press release:
Less than two weeks remain until the opening round of the 2009 Australian Motocross Championship kicks off at the Albury Wodonga Motorcycle Club for the first time.
With gates set to drop at the border-town on 4-5 April, anticipation is building for what looks set to be a massive weekend of racing for the Murray region.
More than 150 of Australia’s best Motocross riders will hurl themselves through the 1.6 kilometre circuit over two days of non-stop action, including reigning Pro Opens Champion Jay Marmont (Yamaha) who will defend his 2008 title.
In another first for the Championship, round one will debut the new Sprint Format, with the Pro Opens, Pro Lites and Under 19s riders put through their paces in three hard, short and fast motos.
With more Championship points up for grabs, spectators will not be disappointed as riders go hard for an early Series lead, taking time out during the lunch break to meet and greet fans and sign autographs.
The Pro riders will have to share the weekend, with qualifying for the 2009 World Junior Motocross Australian Team also taking place at the two-day event.
Preparations are well under way at the club with new 40 rider starting grids installed and the track widened in all areas.
In a show of support for those affected by the recent Victorian bushfires, $10 per car will be charged as admission for Satuday’s action, with all proceeds helping those in the sport that have been touched by the fires.
With Australia’s best Motocross riders taking to the track in the Championship opener this is one event not to be missed.
